Know To Grow: Fake News is a Fake Term: The New Role of Investigative Journalists
Presented by Chastity Pratt Dawsey

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The presentation will examine the evolving role of investigative journalism with an emphasis on deconstructing the job in the era of “fake news.” With the understanding that protecting and exercising freedom of speech was one of the founding principles of AWC, we will also discuss the debate over, and attempts at, redefining freedom of speech.

Questions that will be asked and discussed: What is our role as communicators in the age of “fake news?” What is our role as investigative news reporters? How has “fake news” changed investigative journalism? Freedom of speech?  And, more important, what are some tools communicators/reporters/journalists can use to improve their investigative skills? 

After spending more than 15 years covering the nation’s worst performing school district, Pratt Dawsey has been a presenter, speaker and trainer for several organizations including Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Education Writers Association. In short – this presentation will be informative, provocative and memorable.

ABOUT CHASTITY PRATT DAWSEY

Chastity Pratt Dawsey covers the city of Detroit and urban affairs for Bridge Magazine. She joined the Bridge team from the Detroit Free Press after more than a decade of providing authoritative coverage of Detroit Public Schools. Pratt Dawsey’s work also has appeared in USA Today, Essence Magazine and the Investigative Reporters & Editors Journal. Before the Free Press, the native Detroiter was a reporter at Newsday in Long Island, NY, and The Oregonian newspaper in Portland. She started her career as an intern at The New York Times. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Communications from the University of Michigan.
