HISTORY

The San Antonio Professional Chapter of The Association for Women in Communications Ajay Castro Scholarship was established in 1989, in honor of longtime member Ajay Castro, who served that year as National Professional Conference Chair. Castro, a former Women in Communications President and Headliner, focused on education during her long public relations career.
Ajay Castro

The late Audreyjane “Ajay” Castro was one of San Antonio’s leading communicators. To honor Ajay, the San Antonio Chapter of AWC established a special scholarship fund in her honor. Through the years, she demonstrated her professional expertise by serving as the public information officer for the city’s largest school district, playing a major role in the promotion of the Rivercenter and developing Ford Motor Company’s “Salute to Education.” At the same time, Ajay served on many nonprofit association boards and special event steering committees. Not only did she offer valuable insight to countless organizations, but she also offered advice, support and connections to two generations of women communicators. Of special interest to Ajay were those women who, like Ajay, left the work force to raise a family. Due to a lack of education or training, many of these women face additional challenges when trying to re-enter the work force.
